Sheatre is an award-winning community arts company. Sheatre believes in the power of theatre and the arts to help build a compassionate and healthy society.
We originate interactive dramas, musical events, multi-disciplinary workshops and events called “nothing short of brilliant”, “incredibly powerful” and “necessary”. Working primarily in rural and small urban regions, our objective is to create collaborative projects that address social issues, and inspire creative expression, transformative learning and change through workshops and artistic productions. Founded in 1985, Sheatre under Joan Chandler’s direction has produced over 100 original plays, theatre forum presentations and 575 events to over 83,875 people in Canada, the US and England. The award-winning Far From the Heart/Loin du Coeur, which dealt with dating violence, date rape and safer relationships, began its seventh tour in St. Catharines and Niagara Falls in spring 2013 before travelling to 15 centres including Ottawa, Sudbury and Timmins. The online film adaptation is at www.farfromtheheart.com
With associate artist/producer david sereda, Chandler has created the musicals TOM (based on the life, passion and art of Tom Thomson), Snow Wonder (about the mystery, struggle and joy of winter in Ontario) and a work-in-progress inspired by the Underground Railroad, A Desperate Road to Freedom. They are also working on a new interactive forum theatre play with music, Be Our Ally, in collaboration with LGBTQ youth and their allies in WIarton/Owen Sound, that addresses homophobia through theatre, music and photography.
