Carousel Players is an award-winning professional theatre for young audiences company committed to the development of new work and the production of theatre that entertains and challenges their audiences. The company presents inspiring and creative plays for children aged 5 to 15 years in schools, theatres and other venues. Their shows have been nominated 14 times for Dora Mavor Moore Awards and received the Trillium Innovation in the Arts Award in 2009 and the inaugural Arts in Education Award from the City of St. Catharines.
Throughout their 44 year history, over 2.8 million students, teachers and families have seen Carousel’s productions. Carousel Players operates out of the historic Courthouse in downtown St. Catharines. Starting in January 2016, the company will showcase its public shows in St. Catharines’ newly built FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre as part of their inaugural season.
Carousel Players is a non-profit charitable organization that was started in 1972 by Desmond Davis, a Professor of Drama at Brock University in St. Catharines. Other artistic leaders of the company include Duncan McGregor (1980 to 1990), Pierre Tetrault (1990 to 1998), Kim Selody (1998 to 2006), Pablo Felices Luna (2007 to 2014) and Jessica Carmichael (2015 to present).
